Mountainbike 24 hour race, Finale Ligure
From 19-22 May, “It's important to enjoy yourself!”
In the wonderful setting of the hills of Finale, the Finale Ligure 24 hour race is one of the most important events of its kind in Europe. It was dreamed up in 1999 by a group of hoteliers, some of whom are now involved in the Happy Family Hotels group, along with other Italian cycling enthusiasts. It has developed into an event which combines competitiveness, fun, exploring the local countryside, entertainments for kids and stands promoting all things bike. A weekend in Finale Ligure on the high plateau of le Manie isn't just for bike nuts; it's a holiday for all the family.
Riders alternate in groups of four, eight or 12 on the eight kilometre 24 hour race course.Whoever clocks up the highest number of laps in each category is the winner. The event is important not just for its competitive aspect, but for the enjoyment and group spirit. That's why there are special prizes for the fastest rider on a fixed gear bike, for the most eccentric team and for the best costume, among others.
The course is also unusual: it goes from the seafront along dirt roads and through pine woods. The steep climb represents a real challenge, but the wonderful views from certain parts of the course repay the effort involved. Spectators can cheer on their favourites against a spectacular natural backdrop. The event has even influenced the course of the famous Milan-Sanremo road race, which in 2008 changed its course to run parallel to that of our 24 hour course for one kilometre.
The theme for 2011 is “The 24trix - on the 2011 follow the white rabbit”. There will be lots of surprises for riders and spectators based loosely on the legendary Matrix film trilogy. It's a 24 hour festival for all involved, with live music and DJs day and night. Every year around 900 contestants take part in the race from all around Europe.
The race starts on 19 May from the town's central square, Piazza Vittorio Emanuele and 2,000 bikers will be there
